Why Kirtan?
Sacred song/mantra invites us into the body, the breath, and the present moment. Kirtan is not performance - it is participation: a shared exploration of voice, devotion, and embodied resonance. Through call-and-response, mantra, and melody, we come together to return to the heart and attune to a deeper pulse of life.

What to Expect
Each gathering is an invitation into shared presence through sound, breath, and connection.
-
Gentle vocal warm-ups and chanting of the Indian scale
-
Devotional, melodic call-and-response chanting in English and mantras in Sanskrit (you will be guided in pronunciation and introduced to their meaning with handouts)
-
Satsang — “sat” meaning truth — a space for reflection, sharing, and questions
-
The company of fellow human beings, deepening connection to your own essence
-
Ayurvedic tea and homemade treats to close in warmth and community
Why Do We Sing and Chant?
Sacred sound has long been used as a pathway to transformation and remembrance.
Through repetition and feeling, a mantra can:
-
Calm and focus the mind
-
Uplift and regulate emotions
-
Interrupt habitual thought patterns
-
Bring us back to the present moment
-
Invite remembrance of Self
Physical & Nervous System Benefits
Group singing is not only devotional — it is deeply regulating for the body.
-
Encourages deep, rhythmic breathing (a natural form of pranayama)
-
Stimulates the vagus nerve and supports nervous system balance
-
Releases endorphins and oxytocin, supporting connection and wellbeing
-
Reduces stress and lowers cortisol
-
Strengthens feelings of togetherness and shared humanity
And perhaps most importantly, it invites joy.
Devotion is the quiet force that can carry us deeper in our spiritual practice/life. Even before we fully know or understand, leaning gently into this practice allows the teachings to move us beyond ideas and be felt in the body, the breath, and the subtle flow of presence. In singing, there is a natural effortlessness - we don’t have to try hard to get somewhere; the sound itself carries us. Softening into this openness, this embodied curiosity -invites trust (śraddhā) to grow naturally.
It is this trust/knowing/feeling that opens the heart, steadies the mind, and reveals the depth already present within each of us.
"Bhakti yoga isn't something you join, it's love. It means falling in love.~ Krishna Das
