What is Ayurvedic External Basti Therapy?

External Basti therapy is a powerful yet lesser-known Ayurvedic treatment that uses warm, medicated oils to target specific areas of the body. A ring of herbal dough is placed on the skin and filled with these oils, allowing their healing intelligence to penetrate deeply into tissues, joints, and organs.

Each session is customised with oils selected to match your constitution and healing needs—whether for detoxification, pain relief, or deep nourishment.

Common areas treated include:

  • Lower back (Kati Basti)

  • Cervical spine and shoulders (Greeva Basti)

  • Upper back/thoracic spine (Prsta Basti)

  • Lungs (Puppus Basti)

  • Navel (Chakra/Nabhi Basti)

  • Liver (Yakrit Basti)

  • Bladder (Nimnodhara Basti)

Benefits of External Basti Ayurvedic Treatment

The warmth of the herbal oils:

  • Relaxes muscles and connective tissue

  • Improves blood and energy circulation

  • Nourishes joints, nerves, and internal organs

  • Carries herbs into the deeper tissues (dhatus)

  • Eases pain, inflammation, and energetic blockages

  • Supports emotional release and nervous system balance

Basti therapy works beyond surface symptoms, helping you reconnect with your body’s natural healing intelligence.

Treatment Process

External Basti is traditionally combined with Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic warm oil massage.

  • 10–15 minutes of Abhyanga prepares the tissues by warming and softening them, making them receptive to the medicated oils of the Basti.

  • For back or lung Bastis, back Abhyanga is used; for front Bastis, foot Abhyanga is applied.

A series of 3, 5, or 7 consecutive sessions is recommended for optimal results, especially for chronic conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions about External Basti Therapy

1. How many Basti sessions do I need?

Each body is unique, and the number of sessions depends on your current state and intention for healing. While a single treatment can bring relief and deep nourishment, a series of 3, 5, or 7 consecutive sessions allows the oils to truly penetrate, restore balance, and create lasting shifts. I will guide you on the best plan during our consultation.

2. Is External Basti suitable for everyone?

Basti is a gentle yet powerful treatment, but it may not be suitable during pregnancy, in cases of acute infections, or severe medical conditions. Each treatment is tailored to your constitution (prakruti) and current needs (vikruti), ensuring it is safe and beneficial for you. We will always begin with a short consultation and health form to see if Basti is right for you.

3. What will I feel during a Basti session?

Most women describe Basti as deeply soothing, grounding, and almost meditative. The warmth of the herbal oil melts tension, nourishes the tissues, and invites you to drop into a quiet connection with your body. Many feel lighter, calmer, and more centred after just one session. Some women have reported a deep release in the form of fatigue, pain, or even temporary discomfort after the treatment, which usually lasts no longer than a few hours. Afterwards, they often experience greater freedom and lasting

benefits. Each treatment is unique, and the experience is yours.
